Growing up, I never had a real Christmas tree. Every year, my mom and I would spend a couple of hours assembling and decorating our little artificial tree and call it a day. When I got married, my husband and I got a beautiful 4-foot live Douglas Fir for our tiny apartment, and it was magical. Ever since it has been a tradition for our family to pick out a live Christmas tree together. My husband has taught me all of his best tricks to keep a real Christmas tree fresh and beautiful all season long.
4 Tips that will Keep your Live Christmas Tree Green
1. Trim the trunk right before putting it in water.
This ensures that your tree will be able to absorb all the water it needs to stay fresh. It’s also the key to having a tree that stands up straight! We usually get our tree somewhere an employee can saw off the bottom of the trunk for us right before we take it home.
2. Have the right tree stand for your tree.
Remember, water is the key to a fresh tree. You will need a tree stand that is not only large enough to hold the trunk of the tree but also deep enough to hold plenty of water. Our tree stand is a lot like this one on Amazon, and it is excellent.
3. Add Sprite to the water.
Any kind of sugar water is a great nutrient for your tree! My husband has always said that Sprite is the best, so that’s what we’ve used. I have also heard that a pinch of Epsom salts in the water can provide magnesium sulfate to make the tree greener.
4. Place your tree in a cool part of the house.
One year, we thought that the best spot for our tree would be by the front window in our entryway where everyone could see it from the street. It turns out, we didn’t pay attention to the heating vent blasting hot air into a tiny space. By Christmas morning, half of our tree was dried up and yellowing. It seems like a no-brainer to keep an evergreen cool, but I guess we can all learn from our mistake. Pay attention to where your heating vents are and make sure to place your tree in a cool spot.
I hope these tips can help you keep your tree looking beautiful and fresh so that you can have a magical Christmas!
